Horse Country Rich in Tradition

Aiken gained a reputation during the first hundred years as "a place for a splendid time to be had." So true!   It's beginnings can be traced to the 1800's when Charleston's residents found relief in Aiken from the heat of the Low country.  Soon after, the focus on Aiken came from Northerners who found Aiken to be an ideal place for a variety of equine interests.  Equestrians began bringing horses for pleasure, and grandiose cottages and stables appeared throughout the area.  With 2,100 acres of protected forestland and 70 miles of sandy trails, Hitchcock Woods became a haven for horses and many other outdoor activities. Golf history was made when Aiken became home of the Palmetto Golf Club, (now the nation's fifth oldest course), and when Aiken Golf Club, became the first club in the nation to offer women's tees.

This two-hundred-year-old ambiance is embraced by Aiken residents, businesses, education, sports and government.  Aiken is beautiful, historic, vibrate, economically healthy and diverse.
